Named for the Ventureño Chumash word ‘Awha’y, meaning “Moon,” Ojai is one of Southern California’s most exciting and sought-after areas. As a tourist mecca known for its fabulous boutique hotels, outdoor recreation, local agriculture, and farmer’s markets, Ojai offers an environment that focuses on health, wellness, and spirituality. Perhaps that’s why Ojai’s unofficial local nickname is “Shangri-La,” after the mystical paradise of literature and legend.

Ojai offers a variety of outdoor lifestyle options from the traditional to the eclectic. Here you’ll find hiking, horseback riding, golf and tennis year-round. In addition, you’ll find spa and wellness retreats focusing on the area’s traditional cultural narratives, contemporary meditation practices, and luxurious aesthetic services. Farm and food tours are another draw for visitors and locals alike, offering an introduction to the area’s popular farm-to-table culinary scene.

Originally based on a 17,000-plus-acre Mexican land grant, Rancho Ojai began as a cattle ranch operating in both the upper and lower Ojai valleys. After changing hands several times and being used for everything from cattle to oil drilling, the town itself was laid out in 1874 by a businessman from neighboring Ventura. This is when Ojai gained its reputation as a health retreat, based on both the air quality and the area’s hot springs which drew both visitors and new residents.

Ojai offers a wide variety of home styles, many of which are primarily focused on integrating indoor and outdoor spaces. From views of the Topatopa mountains and Ojai valleys to proximity to world-class resorts and spas, you’re sure to find a home that’s perfect for the way you like to live. With everything from equestrian properties to historic farmhouses, you’re only limited by your imagination.
